Why I recommend starting with recurve over compound

Writer's picture: David McDowellDavid McDowell

Archery is a step by step process that focuses on form over results.  I often compare shooting a compound bow to shooting a rifle; shooting an Olympic style recurve to shooting a pistol; shooting a Barebow to shooting a slingshot.

Obviously, a compound bow with all its features is going to be more accurate than a traditional or a barebow.  Therein lies the problem.  A rather high degree of accuracy can be obtained without having perfected the technique that has the potential of creating the very best results.  However, if one learns and perfects the 11 steps of recurve shooting on the much less forgiving recurve bow that form will greatly improve their accuracy on a compound bow.  There are some differences between recurve and compound form.  However, by perfecting ones form on recurve the transition to compound is very successful.  The opposite is not necessarily the case.

That being said, it is only my opinion based upon my experience. For those who would prefer to go directly to compound I get it. There is nothing wrong with your personal preference and it is the fastest way to become a successful hunter.
